The Prelinger films are an odd assortment of format variants. Some are DVD-compliant MPEG2s, other are SVCD-compliant MPEG2s, still others are only available as MPEG1.
The AVGEEKS files are a little different, and slightly more difficult to work with than the bulk of the files in this archive which are encoded with pulldown at 29.97 fps. The AVGeeks files are actually of a higher quality - pure 23.97 files that preserve each frame, with no messy pulldown to work around. However, some programs do not have the capability to import progressive files. I don't know FINAL CUT PRO, but is it possible older versions of the program may require 29.97 interlaced files?

Not all of the files on the AV Geeks site are 23.97 fps. In the future, most of the files will be 29.97 fps. All the Feature Films are 29.97 fps too.
Since Dan said he tried working with files from both the AV Geeks and Feature Films section, I suspect something else is going on.
